How boat removal works
- Describe the boat. Type, length, material (aluminum, fiberglass, wood) and where it’s parked.
- Get a price. The hauler quotes based on size, weight and how much work it takes to load.
- Pickup. On a trailer, the boat may be towed away whole. Otherwise it’s taken apart on site and loaded.
- Recycling. Aluminum and metal parts are recycled where possible.
Before pickup
- Remove fuel, oil and batteries (take fluids to a county hazardous waste site)
- Take out personal items, cushions and electronics you want to keep
- Find the title or registration card if you have one
- Make sure there’s a clear path to the boat
Minnesota tips
- Registration: Minnesota watercraft are registered with the DNR. Ask the DNR how to update or cancel your registration once the boat is gone.
- Clean, drain, dry: Minnesota’s aquatic invasive species law requires drain plugs to be removed and water drained when a boat is moved. A boat being hauled for disposal should be drained as well.
Could I sell or donate it instead?
If the boat is still seaworthy, selling it or donating it to a charity that accepts boats may be worth a try. If it’s rotted, damaged or nobody wants it, removal is the quickest way to get your driveway back.
